Philadelphia Outward Bound School and the School District of Philadelphia have announced an expansion of their 25 year old partnership. Last night at the Museum of the American Revolution, Dr. William Hite and Katie Newsom told a happy throng of revelers that, beginning in the fall, eight Philadelphia high schools will send their incoming 9th graders on POBS programs to help them build a sense of community with their new classmates, get out of their comfort zones to build character, and develop leadership skills.
It was an inspiring event, complete with two Philadelphia youth describing how POBS programming has increased their confidence, appreciation of the world around them, and ability to work with others.
These are exactly the kind of programs that need to be championed in Philadelphia and in other places where more children need more support to realize their potential. Thanks Kevin Leigh and BNY Mellon for including me.
